Troop 36 Service Projects

Boy Scouts receive considerable goodwill from the community, that helps us grow.

We give back to the community too, with service projects. We help out at non-profit events (school fundraisers, community meals), run food drives, perform flag ceremonies, and take on physical construction and beautification projects. To receive the highest rank of Eagle Scout, a boy is required to define a service project that substantially benefits a non-profit organization, and to plan and execute the project, securing funding and other assistance as appropriate.

The projects listed below describe some of the benefits that Troop 36 has brought to the Santa Barbara and Goleta communities with our construction and beautification projects. The oldest write-up indicates that memories can get weather-beaten too.

2015: Mountain View School: Stump Benches for Outdoor Garden Class

Scouts: All
Geocode: 34.45445, -119.81607

Tree stumps make wonderful foundations for school benches. Mountain View had experimented with the idea, and asked Troop 36 if we could make enough benches to accommodate a full class. A school parent donated the stumps. T36 boys and parents spent a Saturday turning the stumps into four 8-foot-long benches, providing seating for about 24 children.

2015: Scoutmaster Chuck Wagner Memorial Plaque: Landscaping

Scouts: All
Geocode: 34.43284,-119.90558

T36 Scoutmaster Chuck Wagner served the County of Santa Barbara from 1961 to 1992, as Assistant Roads Commissioner, Public Works Director, and Chief Administrative Officer. Chuck shared with his son Steve his vision of building a bridge across US-101, on the new alignment of Cathedral Oaks Road, to link the El Encanto/Winchester Canyon area with Hollister. Years later, as Community Services Director for the City of Goleta, Steve made his father's vision a reality when he opened the bridge to the public on June 9, 2011. The City of Goleta erected a plaque in Chuck's memory.

Troop 36 graded and improved the area around the memorial, coordinating with the City of Goleta regarding its own longer-term plans to beautify the spot.

1968: Eagle Project: Improving a Hiking Trail

Scout: Steven Blois
Geocode: uncertain

My Eagle project involved improving a hiking trail (erosion control berms, some steps, etc.) but it was so long ago I don't remember where exactly it was!  It was either in the Figueroa Mountain area, or it might have been in the hills around Rancho Alegre.  It was done in the Spring of '68, just prior to my receiving the Eagle badge.

Troop records go back only a few years. We invite alumni, particularly Eagles, to submit details of past projects. Write to boyscouts@trp36.org
