History

Origins

Troop 36 was established 1963 March 1. The Application for Charter at right (personal details are masked) indicates that Stan Kallana was Scoutmaster, Robert Lee Alspaugh was Committee Chair, and the Goleta Optimist Club was the Chartered Organization, represented by Harold Mueller.

Steven Blois was the first to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, in 1968.

Meetings were initially held at “George Stiney's office,” on Hollister Ave (just west of the 711, behind today's Epic Motor Sports), Thursdays at 7:30 pm. Later in 1963 the meetings moved to Kellogg School, in 1966 to Goleta Valley Junior High, then back to Kellogg in 1973, and to the current location about 2004.

The Kellogg School PTA became the Chartered Organization in 1982. In 1989, on advice from National and State PTAs, local PTAs withdrew as Boy Scouts COs. In 1990, T36 Chair Tom Quinn was also a Knights of Columbus leader, and the KoC took over the Charter.

In 2015, the Troop was re-chartered under the Rotary Club of Goleta Noontime, with former Committee Chair Dave Gore as Chartered Organization Representative.

The Christmas tree fundraiser started in the mid-1960s, originally located at the intersection of Fairview and Calle Real, where the Vons gas station is today. It moved to the Longs (now CVS) parking lot on Calle Real about 1980.

Favorite Legend

In 2008, T36 boys were looking forward to their summer camp at Pupukea, Hawaii. Two weeks before departure, the airline went bankrupt, and the 16 Scouts and 4 adult chaperones lost their fares. Local news covered the story. TV cameras zeroed in on a mom's computer screen as she tried to re-book fares — that had gone up from about $400 to $1200.

There was a tremendous outpouring of support from the community. Donations ranged from $10 to $1000. An airline dropped its fares by about 30% as a special concession. The trip went ahead.

In appreciation to one major donor, the boys constructed a playground climbing structure.

To commemorate our 50th anniversary, we reconnected with alumni including 1963 founding Committee Chair Bob Alspaugh, who now lives in northern California, and 1966 Committee Chair Peter Bratt, who led the recitation of the Scout Law from memory, and screened 8 mm movies from the 1960s, on T36 white water rafting on the Russian River (Sonoma Co). Many alumni still had their uniforms. It was a memorable occasion.

These are based on the anniversary badges available at the Scout store, and accuracy could well be ±5 years or more. Veteran T37 SM Elmer Jones recalls a 1961 start date for his former Troop, which would make them 50 rather than 40.
